2027: Northerners Shekarau, Ardo, and others turn LND into a political party
Former Kano State governor, Ibrahim Shekarau, along with his colleagues in the League of Northern Democrats (LND), has announced plans to transition the group into a full-fledged political party. Originally established as a pro-northern organization advocating good governance, the group also expressed intentions to expand its scope and rebrand as the League of National Democrats, with support from like-minded individuals in Southern Nigeria.
The initiative aims to establish a political alternative capable of challenging the dominance of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Nigeria’s political landscape.
Dr. Umar Ardo, the convener of the LND, revealed this development in a statement issued in Abuja. He criticized the APC and PDP for their failure to address Nigeria’s fundamental challenges, stating:
“The PDP and APC, along with other existing political parties, have not only failed to tackle Nigeria’s core issues but have shown no intention or capacity to do so over the years.
“Their governance has been characterized by a lack of patriotism and sacrifice. Since their inception, these parties have become entrenched in self-service and dishonesty, particularly after the Obasanjo presidency.
“These parties have evolved into instruments of imposition, where leadership selection is driven by personal ambition and manipulation rather than merit or democratic principles.
“Their internal systems reward loyalty over competence, perpetuating governance that prioritizes patronage over public interest. Consequently, both parties have consistently produced leaders more focused on consolidating power than addressing the socio-economic realities of Nigerians.
“This trajectory has deepened poverty, exacerbated insecurity, eroded public trust, and left the nation burdened by despair and cynicism. It is clear that Nigeria’s progress requires a radical departure from this failing paradigm.”
The group’s proposed transformation seeks to inspire a new political direction and provide Nigerians with a credible alternative to the existing political structure.
