Atiku Abubakar, the former vice president, has suggested a number of changes to the 1999 Constitution, one of which is to rotate presidential authority among Nigeria's six geopolitical zones. According to a statement released by his media office on Wednesday, October 2, Atiku sent the recommendations to Barau Jibrin, the deputy Senate president and chair of the Senate Committee on Constitution Review, in a memo dated August 30. The statement claims that Atiku, the Peoples Democratic Party's (PDP) nominee for president in the 2023 election, is requesting that Section 130 (1) of the constitution be amended to read as follows: "The office of the president shall rotate among the six geopolitical zones of the Federation on a single term of six years flowing between the North and South on the single term of six years respectively." Additionally, he requests that the wording in Section 135 (2) of the text be changed to "subject to the provisions of the subsection (1), the President shall vacate his office at the expiration of a period of Six Years commencing from the date." About four months have passed since some House of Representatives members put out a measure to establish a vice president and a rotating system of presidential succession between the North and the South. Atiku's suggestions follow like. The legislators, dubbed "The Reformers" and led by Ikenga Ugochinyere (PDP, Imo), claimed that among other advantages, the measures' adoption would lower the cost of governance.
